Joint force operation leads to the removal of 77 unsafe commercial vehicles from Strathcona County roads

A joint force commercial vehicle inspection operation, led by Strathcona County Enforcement Services, placed 77 commercial vehicles out of service last week.

Enforcement Services conducted the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Joint Force Operation from Sept. 23-25 alongside inspectors and community peace officers from the following partner agencies: Alberta Transportation, Alberta Tax and Revenue Administration, Alberta Sheriffs, City of Edmonton, Edmonton Police Service and Parkland County.

“192 inspections were completed over the three days,” said Inspector Vito DiSciglio, Enforcement Services Manager with Strathcona County. “We found that 40 per cent of the vehicles failed the inspection and almost 20 percent needed attention.”

Forty per cent of the vehicles passed the inspection.

“Public safety is always our first priority,” added DiSciglio. “Commercial vehicle inspections can help prevent collisions, protect infrastructure and promote traffic safety. During the operations, officers carefully examine the vehicle, looking for any safety issues that could contribute to a collision.”

CVSA inspectors complete annual training to maintain their certification, enabling them to inspect commercial vehicles and drivers for a range of safety requirements, including:

  • Tire inflation and condition

  • Properly secured cargo

  • Vehicle lighting (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, etc.)

  • Brake systems

  • Driver credentials (hours of service, trip inspections)

  • Valid commercial driver's license and endorsements

Common issues include cargo securement, defective brakes, and other brake system violations.

Operators whose vehicles fail the inspection are required to make the necessary repairs and pay any outstanding fines. Fines for violations can range from $324 for a minor infraction up to seizure if the inspectors deem the vehicle to be unsafe for travel on the road.
