Strathcona County hosts Alberta Seniors’ Week Celebration

On Tuesday, June 4, Strathcona County and WESeniors Strathcona are hosting a free Seniors’ Week Celebration in the Community Centre Agora at 401 Festival Lane, Sherwood Park.

Open to older adults and seniors, the event is in celebration of Alberta’s annual Seniors’ Week, which spans June 3 to 9. This year’s theme is, “Thrive...by trying something new.” The County intends to give seniors the opportunity to do just that.

From 9:30 a.m. until 2 p.m., attendees will be able to enjoy a variety of activities, including music by WESeniors Strathcona’s Live Music Circle, outdoor games, a free BBQ, loot bags, door prizes, a 50/50 and more. Attendees won’t want to miss the event’s guest speaker, Haidong Liang, Executive Director of WESeniors, who will give a presentation titled “Older, Bolder, Better!”

“Older adults play a vital role in building a strong and connected community,” says Mayor Rod Frank. “Their contributions can be seen and felt throughout Strathcona County, and they have helped foster a community where future generations can flourish. This event is an opportunity to celebrate and thank our seniors for all they have done.”

Seniors’ Week highlights just one of the County’s commitments to older adults. The County’s current Older Adults Engagement Strategy aims to shape the future of healthy aging for current and future older adults in Strathcona County with the input of our older adults.

“The older adults demographic is made up of four generations, all with unique interests, aspirations and needs,” says Kesa Shikaze, Director of Family and Community Services. “Understanding the diverse needs and priorities of older adults in our community ensures that we build a strong and supportive future for all.”

To stay updated on the project and future opportunities for input, residents can sign up for project updates at strathcona.ca/HealthyAging.
