Final phase of construction for Wye Road

Strathcona County is nearing the end of five kilometres of improvements on Wye Road. The final phase of construction between Estate Drive and Clover Bar Road will start after the May long weekend.

Construction could be completed as early as this fall, pending impacts from weather and unforeseen construction issues. Wye Road improvements have proceeded in phases since 2008.

“We’re on the final stretch of a major project. Wye Road has been thoughtfully designed and improved to make it safer, more accessible and efficient for everyone,” says Kevin Cole, Director of Transportation Planning and Engineering. “As much as possible, we will minimize disruption to residents’ commute while we finish improvements.”

Traffic will be restricted to one lane each direction to allow construction to continue uninterrupted in the closed lanes. Commuters can expect travel times to be longer than usual and are encouraged to consider alternate routes to reduce traffic volume in the area.

Wye Road is a high-volume road providing an important connection to the region.  Road users and pedestrians will notice several improvements during this phase of construction.

  • Increase from four to six-lane roadway (similar to Baseline Road).
  • Additional turn lanes at several intersections.
  • Completion of paved cycling and walking trail along the south side of Wye Road.
  • New traffic signals at Nottingham Way and Estate Drive.
  • Added crosswalks for safety and comfort at Nottingham Way.
  • A more inviting area with green space, landscaping and lighting.

Strathcona County’s plans for an information session were cancelled due to COVID-19. However, residents can find information on the project website, and ask questions through the online service portal County Connect.

Strathcona County is also upgrading, constructing and moving other major infrastructure along Wye Road to support the current and future community, such as stormwater pipes, power cables, street lighting, curbs, gutters and drainage. Improvements on Sherwood Drive, including at the Wye Road intersection, are also planned to begin this construction season.
