Council approves new Municipal Development Plan

Strathcona County has a new Municipal Development Plan after Council gave Bylaw 20-2017 third and final reading. The plan provides a comprehensive land use policy framework to guide future development and growth in the County for the next 20 years.

Since 2007, when the previous Municipal Development Plan was implemented, the County’s population has grown from 80,232 to 98,044. The updated plan will ensure development is sustainable and maintains a high quality of life for current and future residents. It incorporates best practices in efficient land use, sustainability, and promoting a vibrant, safe and healthy community.

Comprehensive public engagement was held with residents and stakeholders to develop the plan. Four phases of public engagement began in 2015 and included the foundations phase, setting direction, options and trade-offs, in addition to a final phase that allowed for comment on the draft plan. Throughout the public engagement, residents had a chance to provide input through surveys, online comment forms, open houses and a youth photo contest.
