Strathcona County will soon be linked to Fort Saskatchewan and Edmonton through a new regional trail system, thanks to partner funding provided by Trans Canada Trail.
Trans Canada Trail is contributing $825,000 towards creating 6.5 kilometres of gravel trail along Range Road 232, north of Highway 16 to Township Road 540. Once complete, the Strathcona County portion of the trail will be 22 kilometres in length, featuring both asphalt and gravel trails.
“Strathcona County is honoured to be part of this legacy project that further unites communities through a recreational trail system,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr. “Connecting to the Great Trail is a particularly appropriate project for Canada’s sesquicentennial, and supports our commitment to a healthy, physically active lifestyle for our residents.”
Trans Canada Trail is a not-for-profit organization created in 1992. Trans Canada Trail is working with donors, partners, governments, public and private landowners and volunteers to create The Great Trail of Canada – an epic trail of trails offering a wide range of activities. By the end of 2017, the year of Canada’s 150th anniversary of Confederation, The Great Trail will be the longest and grandest recreational trail in the world and will wind its way through a variety of landscapes – urban, rural and wilderness – along greenway, waterway and roadway. It will span 24,000 kilometres, link our three oceans and connect over 15,000 communities.
Two sections of the Trans Canada Trail are scheduled to be completed in Strathcona County in 2017 as part of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations. For further information, including a map of this trail, visit www.strathcona.ca/TCT or call
