Gallery@501 kicks off Canada’s 150 celebration

What does it mean to be Canadian? To celebrate Canada’s sesquicentennial year (150th anniversary of confederation), the Gallery@501 is presenting a series of exhibits that explore what exactly it means to be Canadian.

Canada is home to indigenous people, as well as people from all over the world. The Canadian identity is a mixture of national history, as well as hopes for the future.

The series of Canadian exhibits kicks off on January 6, 2017 with Canadianisms: A Half Decade inspired by Canada by Victoria artist, Brandy Saturley. Saturley paints Canadian Contemporary Realism, in particular, Canadian culture and identity. Her paintings, inspired by Canadian culture and sport, include goalie masks, Canadian athletes, the Canadian flag, the Montreal Canadiens, the Alberta Rockies, and Canadian wildlife. Saturley’s work also references “Pan-Canadian” branding, such as the iconic Hudson’s Bay Company and Tim Hortons.

Members of the public are invited to attend the opening reception with artist Brandy Saturley on Friday, January 6 at 7 p.m. at Gallery@501 (#120, 501 Festival Avenue, Sherwood Park).
