Municipal election candidate registration
January 25, 2017

Municipal elections in Alberta will be held on October 16, 2017.
Anyone who is running in this fall’s municipal election ‒ for Mayor or Councillor ‒ is required to register with the municipality prior to accepting campaign contributions or contributing personal funds toward their election campaign.
The registry is directed under the Government of Alberta Local Authorities Election Act and Strathcona County’s Legislative and Legal Services maintains it locally.
The registry and the application for Registration of Notice of Intent to Become a Candidate for Municipal Office is available at www.strathcona.ca/election.
To register, candidates complete and submit the original application to Strathcona County, Legislative and Legal Services:
Office Location: 3rd Floor, North Wing, Strathcona County Community Centre, 401 Festival Lane, Sherwood Park
Mailing Address: 2001 Sherwood Drive, Sherwood Park, Alberta, T8A 3W7
For the registry, candidates are required to disclose:
- full name and address
- address where candidate records are maintained
- names and addresses of financial institutions where campaign contributions are deposited
- names of signing authorities for all institutions listed
Once the intention to run has been filed, candidates must report any information changes to Legislative and Legal Services in writing ‒ by email, mail or fax ‒ within 48 hours of the changes.
In Strathcona County, citizens will elect these positions: Mayor, Councillors (8), as well as school trustees ‒ all to serve a four-year term in office.
More information about running for municipal office in Alberta is available on the Alberta Municipal Affairs website. The Strathcona County 2017 Candidate Guide will be available in early spring.
