Strathcona County assisting efforts in combating Fort McMurray fire

Mayor Roxanne Carr joins her colleagues, the Mayors of Alberta’s Mid-Sized Cities caucus, in expressing solidarity with the people of Fort McMurray and the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.

“It’s heart-breaking to know 85,000 of our friends and neighbours to the north have been evacuated due to the destructive forces of fire,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr. “However, even fire cannot withstand the power of residents and emergency responders in communities across Alberta helping those in need.”

At this point in time, some municipalities have been asked to provide a list of available resources under provincial Mutual Aid protocols. All the Mayors expressed their willingness to provide whatever support would be most useful when asked.

The Provincial Operations Centre asked Strathcona County for immediate fire fighting, command and RCMP assistance in Fort McMurray. On the evening of May 3, 2016, the County deployed a small Incident Management Team (3 people) and a Suppression Task Force (10 firefighters, 2 fire trucks, 2 mechanics). Strathcona County continues its work on all other aspects of response and support, including sending additional Incident Management Team members to bolster the team in the Wood Buffalo Emergency Operations Centre. County staff are also assisting with the Provincial Emergency Social Services response.

The mayors issue a joint call asking their residents to support the people of Wood Buffalo and noted that in disaster situations like this, the most effective form of support is often a financial contribution. Well intentioned contributions of hard goods, clothing and other household items can create significant logistical challenges and are less flexible in meeting the diverse variety of needs.

The mayors recommend residents who wish to make a financial contribution to do so through the Alberta Red Cross. The best method of donating to @RedCrossAB for #ymmfire is online: Alberta Fires Appeal.

Text the word REDCROSS to 30333 to donate $5 directly to the #ymmfire.
