County receives five-bloom silver rating at Communities in Bloom

Strathcona County is honoured to receive a five-bloom (highest score) silver rating, with special mention for Prairie Walk in Centre in the Park, in the Circle of Excellence category during the 2016 National/International Symposium and Awards Ceremonies this past weekend in Regina, Saskatchewan.

Evaluation criteria included tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays. Strathcona County competed along with Brooks, Alberta; Calgary, Alberta; Town of Goderich, Ontario; Town of Indian Head, Saskatchewan; Town of Kinistino, Saskatchewan; and Town of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

“The efforts of the Strathcona In Bloom Society and County staff truly shined in this national competition,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr. “Our dedicated team of over 100 individuals has done a tremendous job year after year to continually strengthen our sense of community and overall quality of life in Strathcona County.”

Strathcona County’s entry demonstrated its commitment to unique main street development throughout Centre in the Park. As the main street commercial and retail core is a relatively new addition to the community, the volunteer judges recognized the design approach of creating a sense of place in the heart of the community.

The Centre in the Park development is designed to create a central gathering place that combines residential, municipal government and major retail spaces intermixed with indoor and outdoor recreational areas and park spaces. This stems from an innovative public-private partnership that was born from public consultation and planning initiatives, dating back to 1990. The Town Square concept has been successfully employed to create a sustainable community gathering space that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

In 2015, Strathcona County won the National Award recipient of the Grand Champions category.
