Strathcona County Census 2015 results

Results from the municipal Census 2015, conducted in May, report Strathcona County’s total population at 95,597, showing a three per cent population increase from the 2012 municipal census.

Of this total population, 68,782 people reside in Sherwood Park, and 26,815 reside in the County’s rural area, which includes farms, acreages and the smaller hamlets.

The 2015 rural population count is 123 less than in 2012. Possible reasons may include rental properties not being rented out, an aging population moving out of the rural community, and people no longer listing their rural residence as their principal residence (they may continue to operate the farm but no longer live there).

During Census 2015, 51 per cent of households participated through the online census, a five per cent increase in online participation from the 2012 municipal census. Completion of the census online is quick, convenient and private, and helps to reduce costs for printing, scanning and personnel.

“Thank you to all of our residents who took the time to complete the census,” said Mayor Roxanne Carr. “As we continue to manage growth and anticipate future needs, census data helps us to plan and deliver municipal services, and provide critical infrastructure. It also enables us to secure maximum grant funding to benefit our residents.”

Many external organizations rely on municipal census data to make decisions about locating businesses or operations within the County. The full Census 2015 report for Strathcona County will be available for the community’s use in October. It will include data such as the population of the hamlets, as well as totals and percentages pertaining to the types and locations of dwellings, and the number, age and gender of residents. More specific census data breakdowns will be available for the municipality’s wards, neighbourhoods and subdivisions.
