County to host the nation's top wrestlers for the Canadian Wrestling Team Trials

The best wrestlers in Canada will be competing at Millennium Place from December 4 to 6, 2015 to claim their spot on Team Canada.

“Strathcona County has a rich history of hosting elite athletes and tournaments,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr. “The Canadian Wrestling Team Trials will be an exciting competition for athletes and spectators alike.”

Over 200 wrestlers, male and female, from across the nation will be competing. The trial winners will be nominated to represent Canada through the qualification process for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Canada Wrestling has already qualified in the Women’s 48 Kg and 63 Kg weight class at the World Championships, held this past September in Las Vegas.

“This will be one of the most competitive wrestling events in recent years,” says Kelly Rich, Vice President of the Friends of the World Cup of Wrestling Society. “There will also be other Canadian Olympians on hand to deliver an inspirational session for many of the schools and wrestling clubs in the region.”

The competition starts on December 4. Wrestling Freestyle finals will take place on December 5 and the Greco-Roman finals on December 6.
