Disconnect to CONNECT - Family Day Unplugged

January 28, 2015

Disconnect to connect with yourself, family and friends

Twenty municipalities in the Capital Region have joined together to encourage residents to unplug on Family Day, February 16, 2015. Everyone is asked to disconnect from technology for the day in order to reconnect with family, friends and community. Go for a walk, gather for a board game, eat dinner together or play in the snow.

Participating municipalities are encouraging each other to unplug and record how many hours can be collectively unplugged throughout the region. Individuals and families from each participating municipality can log the hours spent unplugged on February 17 by visiting www.fcssaa.org. They are encouraged to share their stories on what they did to unplug. There are a variety of events happening throughout the region, connect with your local municipality to find out more.

Why unplug?

  • Fifty-eight percent of two to five year olds can play a computer game, while only 43 percent can ride a bike
  • By graduation, the average teen will have spent more time watching screens than being in the classroom, playing sports and talking to their parents combined. (www.screensmart.ca )
  • Children who watch more television during the first three years of life are more likely to have greater problems with attention deficit disorders when they are between the ages of seven and nine years old (Institute for Safe Families).

The collective unplugged total for the 22 communities participating last year was 129,451 hours.

Family Day Unplugged is an initiative organized and promoted by: Town of Beaumont, Town of Bon Accord, Brazeau County, Village of Breton, Town of Calmar, City of Edmonton, City of Fort Saskatchewan, Town of Devon, Town of Drayton Valley, Town of Gibbons, City of Leduc, Leduc County, Town of Legal, Town of Morinville, Town of Redwater, City of St. Albert, Strathcona County, Sturgeon County and Village of Thorsby.
