From August 27 to 30, Strathcona County is hosting the 2014 Canada 55+ Games. The Canada 55+ Games is a nation-wide program which promotes spiritual, mental and physical well-being among Canadians 55 years of age and older. The first national Games were held in Regina in 1996.

“Strathcona County is proud to host the 2014 Canada 55+ Games. We are excited to welcome all participants and their family to our community and wish them the best of luck in their competitions,” says Mayor Roxanne Carr.

Participants will compete in 24 different sports and activities ranging from hockey and swimming, to bocce and darts.

“The 2014 Games are set to be the largest Canada 55+ Games on record with over 2,000 competitors and 400 of their family members coming to Strathcona County from across Canada to participate,” says Games Chair, Margaret Marciak. “Including the Organizing Committee, we have over 600 volunteers working hard to help make these Games an amazing experience for all of our visitors.”

The public is encouraged to get involved in the action by cheering on the different provinces and territories as they compete for gold. Spectating is free for all sports and activities. The events take place in various venues across Sherwood Park and Ardrossan.
