Job Description

This posting is for multiple seasonal positions ranging from 17 to 32 weeks in duration.

These positions contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational opportunities through the performance of manual labour and tasks. 

The RPC Labourers support Broadmoor Public Golf Course, turf development and maintenance, feature sports fields, horticulture and urban forestry, playground construction and maintenance, and weed control within Strathcona County.

The Agricultural Labourers will operate equipment for herbicide application; maintain gardens, and clear woody vegetation in compliance with the Rural Roadside Vegetation Control Program.

Responsibilities

As a Labourer I, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform manual tasks in all operations including use of hand power tools and equipment (shovels, rakes, screwdrivers, etc.)
  • Learn the safe operation of small equipment (string trimmers, push mowers, chainsaws, chippers, drills, backpack sprayers, etc.) to assist operators
  • Operate trucks up to and including two-ton trucks and trailers
  • Follow safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on the work site

As a Labourer II, you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Perform manual tasks in all operations, including use of hand power tools and equipment (shovels, rakes, screwdrivers, paintbrushes, etc.)
  • Safely operate small equipment (string trimmers, push mowers, drills, generators, chainsaws, chippers, backpack sprayers, etc.)
  • Monitor, maintain and service equipment and tools to ensure they are in proper working order and meet operating standards
  • Operate small tractors, trucks, trailers, etc.
  • Follow safety guidelines to keep self and others safe on the work site
  • May lead and oversee the work of a group of Labourers on an assigned basis

Skills and Abilities

  • Good communication, leadership and interpersonal skills to interact in a positive manner with others
  • Strong organizational, time management and decision-making skills
  • Ability to adapt to new and changing conditions, combined with initiative and responsibility
  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions, and to maintain concentration and alertness for extended periods of time
  • Knowledge of OH&S, MSDS and WHMIS Regulations
  • Proficiency in the use of a variety of equipment, hand and power tools

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 10 education
  • Previous experience with turf maintenance, turf development, horticulture, forestry, construction, golf course maintenance, sports field maintenance, landscaping and agriculture
  • Eligible to achieve competency in the operation of chainsaws and tree felling
  • Experience operating small equipment (e.g. hand and power tools)
  • Supervisory and previous municipal experience would be considered assets
  • Current First Aid and CPR certification would also be considered assets

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators Licence and less than seven demerits
  • Submission of satisfactory criminal record check
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions

Selected candidates will be invited to attend an open house on February 9th or 19th, 2019.  Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to bring a current driver’s abstract to the interview.
