Job Description

This posting is for multiple seasonal positions ranging from 17 to 36 weeks in duration

The Equipment Operators contribute to the maintenance and improvement of outdoor recreational areas by safely operating a variety of self-propelled small equipment, perform manual labour and train other staff in the safe operation of equipment.

The RPC Equipment Operators perform work in areas such as; turf development and maintenance, horticulture, urban forestry, playground construction and maintenance and weed control within Strathcona County. 

The Agriculture Equipment Operators may mow all rural roadside ditches and maintain County owned lands.

Sprayer Operators perform manual herbicide application using a spot spray system to Strathcona County rural rights-of-way and municipal reserves for traffic safety and in accordance with provincial legislation.

Responsibilities

As an Equipment/Sprayer Operator I, you may have the following responsibilities:

  • Operate self-propelled equipment including a variety of trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers, gas powered and electric hand tools and a variety of small equipment such as string trimmers, push mowers, chainsaws, generators, chippers, drills and backpack sprayers in a safe and efficient manner
  • Identify and control weedy plant species on County owned property by performing manual spot spray herbicide application
  • Calibrate spraying equipment and calculate application rates for vegetation control
  • Monitor, maintain and service equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meets operating and safety standards
  • Use and share knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulations and Code, follows safety guidelines, identifies potential hazardous situations and adapts appropriately
  • Assist Operator II and Team Lead positions by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Display accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks, and assist with other related duties

As an Equipment/Sprayer Operator II, you may have the following responsibilities:

  • Operate self-propelled equipment including a variety of trucks, trailers, tractors, skid steers, gas powered and electric hand tools and a variety of small equipment such as chainsaws, generators, chippers, drills and backpack sprayers in a safe and efficient manner
  • Provide supervision of staff to meet workload and safety requirements (OHS)
  • Monitor, maintain and service equipment to ensure it is in proper working order and meet operating and safety standards
  • Use and share knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) Regulations and Code,
  • follows safety guidelines, identifies potential hazardous situations and adapts appropriately
  • Assist Team Lead position by training other staff members in the proper operation and maintenance of equipment
  • Display accountability when providing direction, training, and overseeing the work of small crews in the completion of assigned tasks, and assists with other related duties

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to follow written and verbal directions and interact in a positive manner with internal and external customers
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Knowledge of occupational health and safety and WHMIS regulations
  • Ability to maintain mental alertness while performing duties often with frequent interruptions and under time constraints; unscheduled overtime may be required
  • Ability to organize a crew to perform basic job functions efficiently, promote team building
  • General mechanical knowledge

Qualifications

  • Minimum high school diploma or equivalent with two years related experience in; turf maintenance, turf development,  horticulture, forestry, construction, golf course maintenance or sports field maintenance landscaping and agriculture
  • Previous experience operating trucks, trailers, ride-on mowers, tractors, skid steers and/or small equipment and engines (e.g. chainsaws, chippers, drills, etc.)
  • Eligible for Herbicide Application Authorized Assistant certificate
  • The following credentials or experiences would be considered as assets:
    • Certified Pesticide Applicator’s Licence
    • Experience with plant identification
    • Canadian Certified Playground Inspector certification
    • Supervisory experience
    • Previous municipal experience
    • Current First Aid and CPR certification

Conditions of Employment

  • Valid Class 5 Alberta Operators Licence and less than seven demerits
  • Submission of satisfactory criminal record check
  • Ability and willingness to perform various types of physical labour including moderate to heavy lifting (up to 23 kilograms), standing, bending, shoveling, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to perform duties in inclement and adverse weather conditions

Selected candidates will be invited to attend an open house on February 9th or 19th, 2019.  Attendance is not mandatory, but recommended.

Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to bring a current driver’s abstract to the interview.
