Early Childhood Coalition
The first five years of a child’s life are the most critical period in development and have a lifelong impact on learning, health, work, relationships and well-being. Studies show children tend to perform better in strong, supportive communities. Nurturing and responsive relationships with caregivers, as well as strong connection to community, creates the best environment to develop the skills children need for life.
The Early Childhood Coalition engages families, community members and organizations on behalf of young children (prenatal to six years). Coalition members raise public awareness about the importance of the early years, and help to identify community needs, issues and opportunities in order to improve supports for young children and their families.
By working together we can help children reach their full potential.

The Early Development Instrument (EDI) and how it’s being used in Alberta
The Early Development Instrument (EDI) gauges how populations of young children are developing. The Alberta EDI Program ensures that comprehensive data on the development of young children in Alberta is available to inform planning, policy and programming decisions at a provincial and community level, and supports the work of the coalition at the local level.
The data collected through the EDI helps communities, organizations, and government understand what is working well and what services are needed for children and families to support healthy development, learning and care both locally and provincially.
