Keeping your Council informed
Published February 15, 2008
One would almost come to think that with all the time and attention being paid to the Capital Region Integrated Growth Management Plan (CRIGMP) over the past several months, there would be no time left for other endeavours in our wonderful municipality. I want to assure you that there are many other projects being worked on. Often new projects and initiatives are considered because residents take the time to bring issues to the attention of Council as a whole. We have had the opportunity to hear from several members of our community through the Council Open House.
During every Council Meeting, residents and groups are provided with an opportunity to address Council once on any issue. Presenters are encouraged to register in advance as those who pre-register are allowed to speak first. Since only 30 minutes is set aside during each Council Meeting, only a limited number of speakers can be heard. Speakers are given five minutes for their presentation followed by a time for questions from Council. Power point presentations, pamphlets, models and photographs can be included in the presentation. This week we heard from an organization called Ophelia's Voice; and Parents Empowering Parents came to update Council on what the group is doing in the community. Also, a group of young riders requested Council's consideration to amendments to the Land Use Bylaw so that Strathcona County would be a better place for them to pursue their sport. Many of the past presentations have led to changes in the way we do business and in the support and consideration of new projects. Through this process, I would encourage you or your group to take the time to make Council aware of what you are doing or what your needs are. To pre-register to speak, contact Shirley Purschke, Legislative Meeting Assistant at 464-8105. Council Open House usually begins at 5:30 p.m.
Awareness of the issues is the first step in affecting change whether it be a local or a regional issue. Despite the creation of a Regional Board, Strathcona County continues to exist. We have taken the opportunity to bring our concerns to the forefront and I have no doubt they will not fall on deaf ears. Please use the Council Open House as your opportunity to keep your Council informed.
