Festival Place - Under the Big Top Camp

Published June 20, 2008

Oh, to be 17 again! This time it isn't for the usual reasons, but rather to be able to be a participant in Festival Place's week long 'Under the Big Top' Camp! As a former drama teacher I certainly have a bias for all things theatre, but I also see this event as history making in the region. Remember many years ago when the Children's Festival began and then grew to international proportions ,well the Big Top Festival has all the makings of international success in the years to come.

There are three components to the festival. Young people aged 6 - 17 can register for the week long camp and be trained by professionals in the genres of magic, physical theatre or puppetry. Adults can participate in workshops and there will be a full week of performances for the general public to attend. Words cannot adequately express the excitement that this event will bring to our community. Sheldon Casavant originally called Sherwood Park home and is now performing around the world. He has been back home on several occasions and has filled Festival Place, entertaining all with his magic and illusionary feats. Sheldon will be one of the instructors at the day camp.

Tom Pandos and the Board of Festival Place, along with Gavin Farmer and his staff, are offering a unique opportunity for our young people and since there is limited space register early! Along with the support of the Board, an event such as this relies on the generous support of our corporate community and Total E&P Canada Ltd, Strathcona County, and the Province of Alberta are proud supporters of the Big Top Festival. Young people will not only develop their artistic talents but also communication and presentation skills, skills that are essential in today's work world.

As for me, since 17 is no longer an option I look forward to participating in a workshop or at the least attending one of the many performances.

Additional information, event tickets and registration are available at www.festivalplace.ab.ca.
