A community spirit and pride

Published May 30, 2007

There is so much controversy over so many things lately that at times we do not know what to think. Summer is coming (we hope) and rather than speak on issues that are controversial, I would like to comment positively on a recent event held at Festival Place. Given the state of world, national and local affairs, I think we all need a rest from the hullabaloo.

Last week, Council hosted the annual Pride of Strathcona Awards. In their May 23rd edition, The News reported on the recipients and gave a short summary of their contribution to the community. The mood at Festival Place that night was absolutely superb. As we listened to the contributions that all the recipients have made to the community, it made one stop and realize how truly blessed Strathcona County is to have these people, as well as all of the other people who contribute so much. Without all of you, where would our community be; where would our spirit be?

Strathcona residents have stepped up to the plate many times in the past for a variety of events, large and small. With the upcoming Western Canada Summer Games, I know our residents will once again do Strathcona County proud. I believe the award recipients are a microcosm of the level of dedication, service, commitment and devotion to community that exists in Strathcona County.

When we look at a community and its people, we notice the money they have, the taxes they pay, the services they receive, etc. One point we tend not to factor into the equation, is the vitality of the people, their immense contribution to the community and their desire to make the community a better place to live.

I believe it is folly to equate a community's well being to financial and material needs. Without people, we are not a community. Without the devotion to community that so many Strathconians demonstrate, we could never be a community. We as a County are richly blessed to have so many wonderful and caring people in our midst who contribute immensely to our quality of life. I salute all of you and offer you my immense thanks. May you have a wonderful, safe summer and may God bless Strathcona County.
