First ever Active Living Conference
One-day conference a gathering for older adults
New this year, Strathcona County is holding a conference to bring together a special segment of the population?older adults. The Active Living Conference is an opportunity for men and women age 55 and better to come together to enjoy learning and networking.
"This conference came about when we were developing the older adults plan," says Mayor Cathy Olesen. "People told us they were looking for opportunities to connect with others and to learn about various things of interest to them."
The conference will be held Saturday, September 19, 2009 at Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park. The day's activities run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The registration fee is $45 per person. Early-bird registrations are due by August 14 and the final deadline for registering is September 11. The registration fee includes: all keynote speakers, three session choices, continental breakfast, lunch, display area and a chance to win draw prizes.
Participants can attend three different sessions from an offering of 14, choosing from such topics as wills and estate planning, sharing history through storytelling, hobbies, fitness and leisure, gardening, nutrition and wellness, and much more.
Registration brochures are available at various locations across the County, including Strathcona County Family and Community Services, Strathcona County Library, County recreation facilities, the Information and Volunteer Centre for Strathcona County, and online.
The event is being organized by a planning committee made up of community volunteers, and representatives from Strathcona County Family and Community Services, Strathcona County Recreation, Parks and Culture as well as various agencies including the Information and Volunteer Centre for Strathcona County, Alberta Health Services, Continuing Education/Elk Island Public Schools and Strathcona County Library.
