An at-grade crossing, also referred to as street level crossing, is where a roadway and rail line cross each other at the same elevation. Vehicles are required to stop and yield to crossing trains.

There are several at-grade crossings in Strathcona County. Both the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) and Canadian National Railway (CN) operate rail lines through Strathcona County.

Reduced visibility or travel surface condition at an at-grade crossing

If you find sightlines on the road right-of-way to be obscured (ie. by vegetation) or are concerned about the condition of the road, please contact Transportation Engineering and Operations at 780-417-7100.

Train whistle cessation

Prior to Council passing a resolution to enact whistle cessation, a detailed safety assessment was completed at each crossing and required safety improvements were installed.

You may still hear a train whistle from time to time.  Train operators always have the responsibility to sound the whistle at their discretion should they feel it is needed to maintain safety.

Please observe and obey all warning devices when approaching any railway crossing and look both directions before crossing.

Frequently asked questions

Safety information

What is the safest way to negotiate an at-grade railway crossing?

A railway crossing sign means you must yield to all trains. You must stop when a train is visible or sounding an audible signal and approaching within 500 meters of the crossing. Railway crossings may have further control in the form of a stop sign, flashing red lights, bells, and/or gates.

Chapter 8 of the Driver's Guide to Operation, Safety and Licensing outlines the proper procedures for navigating at-grade crossings depending on the traffic controls in place at the intersection.

Who decides what safety measures are put in place at a grade crossing?

The Railway Safety Act (RSA) gives Transport Canada responsibility to oversee railway safety.

In January 2019, Transport Canada released a revised version of Grade Crossing Standards to help reduce the frequency and severity of collisions at grade crossings. Strathcona County has evaluated, and continues to monitor,  all grade crossings throughout the County to ensure that they meet or exceed these standards.
