Strathcona County has in its fleet 16 hybrid units as well as four vehicles equipped with solar panels.
The hybrid units save fuel and emissions by allowing the zero emissions electric motor and the gasoline or diesel engine to work independently to propel the vehicle.
The hybrid unit's engine automatically shuts off when the vehicle comes to a stop. Annually, all 16 hybrid units collectively save approximately 17.0 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
Solar Panel Vehicles
Vehicles equipped with solar panels allow the driver to power two-way radios, laptops and warning beacons without idling the vehicle's engine.
This option reduces tailpipe emissions from entering the atmosphere. Each vehicle equipped with the panel can save an average of 0.95 tonnes of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.
