Bottled water facts

Drink outside the bottle

Bottled water has become a popular beverage in recent years. It is convenient, quick and a healthy alternative to sugary soft drinks.

We rarely think about
how much money is spent on our bottled water purchases. Consider the following example:

If a Sherwood Park resident drinks their recommended eight glasses a day, how much money would it cost for a year's worth of bottled water?

$2,190

How much would it cost for a year's worth of tap water?

$0.89

Bonus question

If a bottle of water is purchased for $1.50 at a vending machine, how many bottles of tap water could you fill for the same price?

2,460 times

According to Health Canada, bottled water is no healthier for us than tap water, so why are we spending so much on bottled water?

For a refreshing, yet inexpensive alternative to bottled water, place a jug filled with tap water in your fridge. As an added bonus, think of all the plastic bottles you'll keep out of the landfill!

Where does bottled water come from?

Next time you see a bottle of water, check the label for its source. The water may come from a natural spring in the rainforest or a well deep underground. Many popular brands of bottled water come from our municipal drinking water supply.
