Changes to utility rates
Effective January 1, 2012, there will be some changes in the water, wastewater, stormwater and waste collection on residents' monthly utility bills. Each of the charges is explained briefly.
Current utility rates vary depending on several factors including location and type of service. Detailed rate information is listed in the Fees and Charges schedule under Utilities.
Water rates
Water - flat charge
This pays for the water meter, monthly billing and maintenance of fire hydrants. There is no change in 2012. This charge has remained unchanged for 12 years.
Water - metered
For 2012, the rate includes an increase for the new infrastructure and increased operation and maintenance costs. The actual cost for each household will depend on the volume of water used. For the average household in Sherwood Park, Ardrossan and the expanded services area, this will mean an increase of $1.67 per month
The metered rate for Ardrossan, expanded services area, rural service area and Josephburg will remain unchanged.
Wastewater rates
Sewer - operation and maintenance (O&M)
There is no increase in the O&M rate for 2012.
Sewer - Treatment
This charge reflects the cost of sewage treatment at the Alberta Capital Region Wastewater Commission Treatment Plant. This charge is based on the amount of water consumed by each household. The 2012 rate has an addition of 6.1 cents per cubic meter or $1.13 per month for the average Sherwood Park and rural service area household.
You can control some of the costs by following some simple water conservation practices.
Stormwater system rates
Sewer - storm
This pays for the maintenance of the stormwater facilities and collection. In 2012, an addition of $0.19 per month has been approved for each household in Sherwood Park.
Solid waste pickup
This pays for waste collection. The rate increase for waste collection is $.25 per month. Revenue collected from recycling helped offset the increase from being higher.
