Green terms: heres what they mean

Compostable A material based on plant or animal tissues that will decompose in the environment. A compostable bag is made from a food by-product and can break down easily into soil.

Container recyclables Materials such as tin or aluminium cans, glass jars, plastic bottles or containers, film plastics, plastic bags and Styrofoam.

Fibre recyclables Paper products such as newspapers, mixed paper, boxboard or cardboard.

Household hazardous waste Items that are toxic, ignitable, reactive, or corrosive. These items should not go to the landfill. Take them to the Enviroservice event for proper disposal at a processing facility.

Organics Materials that are or were recently living, such as leaves, grass or food scraps. These items can be placed in the green cart for collection. Larger organic materials, such as branches, stumps and sod, can be taken to the Streambank Avenue Recycle Station.

Recyclable A material that can be manufactured into a new product. Recycling involves changing the physical form of an object or material and making a new object from the altered material.

Reduce Action taken before waste is generated to either reduce or completely prevent the generation of waste.

Reusable An item or material that can be used more than once prior to sending it to be composted or the landfill.

Waste Materials that are not organic or recyclable. Typically waste items are made from two or more different types of materials and are combined into one. An example would be a chip bag, made of foil and plastic.
