Make back to school eco-friendly

Kids are back to school and it's time start the year off green.

Here are some eco-friendly that are sure to get an A+ from the environment:

Packing lunches for yourself or someone else?

  • Consider waste-free lunches as an alternative to paper bags and pre-packaged foods.
  • Think about getting a reusable lunch kit and reusable containers instead of using plastic everyday.
  • Try to avoid pre-packaged foods. They may be convenient but they are not environmentally friendly. Buy bulk portions and place them in reusable containers.

School supplies

  • Back to school shopping can be overwhelming when it comes to school supplies. Remember to think of recycled paper when making your purchase. Every ton of paper that is recycled saves about 17 trees.
  • Make your own school supplies. You can create unique notebooks by collecting stacks of used computer paper, turning it over and punching three holes along the long side. Add a special cover for the front and back by cutting out two pieces (8.5 cm x 11 cm) of cardboard from a cereal box, attach to the front and back and your sure to have a unique notebook!
  • Look for supplies from last year. Things like binders and scissors might still be functional for this school year.
  • Investigate if yuor school has a book rental program. Instead of buying new, think about renting books or exchanging with friends. It's much more cost effective and cuts down on printing.

Back to school shopping

  • Think about hosting a clothing exchange with your friends before school starts. Organize your friends on an afternoon to bring clothes that you might not wear anymore and swap them. One person's old clothing could be a first day outfit for someone else.
  • Think about second hand stores. They usually have great vintage items at a fraction of the cost.

Remember to think eco-friendly when deciding on transportation to and from school. Ride your bike, take the bus or arrange a carpool with kids in your neighborhood. If you live close enough you could even walk, it's great exercise, but remember to be safe!
