The Weight Restriction and Road Ban Bylaw 13-2008 is for the purpose of restricting the weight of commercial vehicles and the goods being carried by commercial vehicles on Strathcona County roadways.
What are posted axle weights?
Posted axle weights are the weight restrictions for commercial vehicles placed on a road to protect the infrastructure from damage. A map of current road weight restrictions is available on our website.
What is overweight?
Overweight is defined as the weight on a tire, axle or axle group, or gross weight, being more than that allowed under the Motor Transport Act. More information on axle weights can be obtained from Provincial Highways at 1-888-255-5554.
Do I need a Tridem Axle Certificate (TAC) Permit?
This permit allows tridem axles and/or vehicle configurations with a Gross Vehicle Weight greater than 53,500 kg to operate on local roads at the same legal maximum weights as on provincial highways, as per Alberta Regulations 315/2002 of the Traffic Safety Act.
Do I need a Road Use Agreement (RUA)?
Are you exceeding posted axle weights? If the answer is YES, then you do require a RUA. If the answer is NO, you do not require a RUA - unless you are hauling six or more loads; in which case, you may require a Multi-Trip RUA. Application forms are available on our website. Alternatively, we can send an application form by fax or email.
What is a Multi-Trip RUA?
If making six or more trips on the same road/route while under the posted axle weights, a Multi-Trip RUA may be required.
What is a divisible load?
Any load that can be lightened; for example, water, gravel, lumber or concrete. We do not issue RUAs for divisible loads to exceed posted axle weights.
What is a non-divisible load?
Any load that cannot be lightened; for example, service trucks, hydro-vac trucks or concrete pump trucks.
When are road bans in effect?
March 8, 2010 - June 1, 2010: Spring Road Bans (75% on most rural roads)
June 1, 2010 - March 6, 2011: Seasonal Road Bans (90% on most rural roads)
Why are there set dates for the road bans?
These dates have been established as the "typical" times when roads are vulnerable to frost coming out and causing considerable damage.
Do I need to keep a copy of the RUA with me?
All commercial trucks operating under a RUA must carry a copy of Exhibit "D" whenever they are hauling in Strathcona County.
How long does it take to issue a RUA?
It takes three to five business days to process RUA applications.
Are there any costs associated with RUAs?
A fee of $120.00 will be charged if inspections are completed during Transportation and Agriculture Services' office hours (Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). A minimum of two inspections will be completed throughout the duration of a RUA.
