Snow depth on residential streets

How the County "measures" when residential street (Priority 4) snow clearing will begin

The depth of packed snow is measured weekly on 18 streets throughout Sherwood Park. Each street is measured in five different locations, and the average of these five spots is calculated. The measurements of these 18 streets are then averaged.

What are the measurements that trigger residential street snow clearing to be scheduled?

  • When compacted snow measures 10 cm
  • If after January 1, compacted snow measures 7.0 cm

In ordinary conditions, residential streets are attended to as required to control conditions such as slippery sections or deep rutting. In extraordinary circumstances, where deep snow pack is softening and vehicular mobility is becoming severely compromised, residential street snow clearing may be considered.

Weather forecast, snow pack conditions and temperature are taken into account when deciding to begin a residential street snow clearing program.

When residential street snow clearing begins, watch for No Parking signs.
Before the heavy equipment begins working, No Parking signs will be posted.
