Junior Outdoor Leader
The Strathcona Wilderness Centre (SWC) is offering our Junior Outdoor Leader Program for summer 2013. The program is designed to exchange valuable training and work experience for your assistance during our summer day camps. An opportunity for continued experience and training with winter outdoor sports and activities is available.
The program has been divided into two levels. (Level I and II). Details on each of these programs are provided below.
Level I: (13 – 15 years)
For younger or first year leaders, this program provides leadership training and experience in the following areas:
a) the delivery of outdoor programs we offer to summer campers;
b) emergency response;
c) introductory canoe and kayak skills; and
d) general outdoor living skills.
Participants in this program will receive 6 days of training (between June 8th and July 5th) including the opportunity to participate as a volunteer in the Strathcona County Canada Day Event. In order to meet the work experience component of the program, we will require Level I JOL’s to commit to assisting with two weeks of our summer day camp programs. The fee for this program is $50.00. Fees include meals and accommodations during the training week, transportation to and from activity sites, all group equipment and instruction. Please see the detailed itinerary below.
Level II: (15 – 17 years)
For older teens or those 15 years old with previous leader experience, the Level II JOL program provides increased training and experience. Pre-season training includes:
- one day of wilderness living skills training (June 22nd);
- one day of canoe training (July 5th); and
- a Standard First Aid Certification (June 15th, 16th).
Participants will also participate in other Strathcona Wilderness Centre specific training between June 8th and July 5th, which includes the opportunity to participate as a volunteer in the Strathcona County Canada Day Event. Participants will have the opportunity to achieve Canoe Level I and Canoe Level II skills. This provides the foundation for future instructor certifications. In order to meet the work experience component of the program, participants will be required to commit to three weeks of work experience assisting with the summer camps. This program will provide foundational skills for future employment in the outdoor education/recreation field…and it will be FUN! The fee for Level II is $120.00. The fee includes all courses listed above, as well as meals, accommodations, group equipment and instruction during the scheduled training days.
