5 steps to a greener lawn
Healthy, well-maintained lawns are less likely to have weed or pest problems and need little or no chemicals. Here are five easy ways to improve the health of your lawn.
- Grasscycling
Leave nutritious grass clippings on the lawn as a source of slow-release nitrogen. - Water the Roots
Water only in early morning and evening. Too much water starves the lawn of oxygen. Lawns require only about 2.5 cm (1 inch) of water per week. - Mow High
Keep lawn at about 6 cm (2 1/2 inches) using sharp blades for a clean cut. This height promotes better root growth and moisture retention. - Reduce Herbicides
Develop a tolerance for a few weeds or pull them out by hand. Treating the entire lawn with herbicide is not recommended. - Crowd out Weeds
Overseeding the lawn in the fall keeps grass thick and will choke out weeds.
