Back to school traffic safety

Child crossing streetStrathcona County schools are back in session starting Monday,

September 7, 2009, at 8 a.m. Several hundred new students will be starting Kindergarten and thousands more students will return to class.

The Traffic Safety Initiative will be pursued with zero tolerance to make this return to school as safe as possible.

As in past years, speed enforcement, stop sign infractions and seatbelts will be targeted on an ongoing basis, specifically in school zones. The enforcement campaign will be conducted throughout Strathcona County.

Under the Traffic Safety Act, all school zones and playground zones now have a maximum speed limit of 30 km/h, including school and playground zones on primary highways located near Ministik, Ardrossan and Uncas Schools.

School zones are in effect when school is in session:
  • 8 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
  • 11:30 - 1:30 p.m.
  • 3 p.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Playground zones are in effect all year:

      • 8:30 a.m. to one hour after sunset.

Strathcona County RCMP Traffic Services encourages all drivers to use extra caution when traveling through playground and school zones. As well, a very safe and successful school year to all students in Strathcona County.
