Ardrossan Area Structure Plan Review
The Ardrossan Area Structure Plan (ASP) review is important to our community. The following provides an update of our review including background information, our progress to date and the steps still to come.
Stathcona County is currently reviewing the existing Area Structure Plan for the hamlet of Ardrossan. The plan is being updated to provide a sustainable land use planning framework that will guide future subdivision and development within the hamlet, in accordance with Strathcona County’s Municipal Development Plan and general goal of achieving sustainability.
What has happened so far?
On April 6, 2011, a community workshop was held to gather input from the community on the future of Ardrossan. The workshop included brainstorming community values, creating a vision statement, identifying future opportunities, and a mapping exercise aimed at creating the ideal Ardrossan community.
Concepts 1-7
On May 11, 2011, development concept ideas evolving from the community workshop were displayed at the annual Ardrossan Rural Living Days community event. Two scenarios were displayed along with a questionnaire for the public to complete. The public was asked to choose their preferred scenario.
Scenarios
On June 25, 2012, three draft land use concepts were created from feedback that was received from the community through the review process.
The open house provided an opportunity for the community to comment on the three draft land use concepts. These draft land use concepts were also displayed at the Ardrossan Recreation Complex until July 6th, along with comment sheets.
Draft land use concepts
Based on the feedback received from the community, an additional open house was held on September 13, 2012 to display the preferred Land Use Concept.
What are the next steps?
The Area Structure Plan (ASP) policies being drafted intend to guide development to align with the preferred Land Use Concept. Once finalized, the proposed ASP will be brought to Council for Public Hearing and a request for first reading. Residents may register to speak directly to Council at the Public Hearing regarding the draft Androssen ASP. For further information, click here.
What is an Area Structure Plan?
An ASP is a long-term planning document that guides growth and development for the hamlet over the next 15 to 20 years.
Why Review the Area Structure Plan?
Strathcona County adopted a new Municipal Development Plan (MDP) in 2007. The MDP is our primary planning document providing for comprehensive long-term land use policy framework. Ardrossan was identified in the MDP as a major growth hamlet.
Through the 2011 Capital Budget process, Strathcona County Council identified funding for the construction of a sanitary sewer line to Ardrossan. This line will accommodate future growth in Ardrossan that has been limited in the past.
