Census
A census conducted in May 2012 shows that Strathcona County is Alberta's third largest municipality after Calgary and Edmonton.
Results from the municipal Census 2012, reports Strathcona County’s total population at 92,403, showing a five per cent population increase from the 2009 municipal census. Of this total population, 65,465 people reside in Sherwood Park, and 26,938 reside in the County’s rural area, which includes farms, acreages and the smaller hamlets.
How we use the census information
The population count helps the County obtain federal and provincial grants, many which are calculated on a per-capita basis. Every additional resident increases the grant dollars to Strathcona and ensures that we receive our fair share.
The census information also serves as a foundation for planning new community services and enhancing existing ones. An accurate count of residents and the number in each age group is essential for Strathcona County to plan ahead for the municipal services that residents will require.
