Changes to Municipal Boundaries approved

Strathcona County Council has given three readings to a bylaw that has changed the municipal ward boundaries, the areas from which councillors are elected.

The bylaw establishes eight wards instead of the current seven. Effective with the October 2007 municipal election, Strathcona County Council will consist of nine members, one of whom is Mayor, rather than the current eight.

Proper boundaries provide for effective Council representation for all residents. They establish wards that are consistent with municipal plans, and take into account the urban and rural characteristics of areas within the municipality.

Boundaries are also important in balancing the workloads of the councillors. In establishing ward boundaries, municipalities must meet a number of legal and statutory requirements.

Bylaw 59-2006 was given third reading on December 12, 2006.
