FAQ about jobs

Do I need to submit a resume and an application form?
No. You can come in and fill out an application or give us a resume, but we do not need both. We would prefer a resume, simply because it usually tells us more about you.

When will I hear if I'll be interviewed?
The applications and resumes are not reviewed until after the competition closes.

You can follow the progress of a competition by visiting theĀ status of recent competitions page. Here you can see when a competition closes, becomes short-listed or is filled.

Applicants who will not receive an interview will not be contacted.

How long is the probationary period?
Depending on the position, three months, six months or one year.

What's the benefit plan like?
Strathcona County provides a comprehensive benefit package for full-time and part-time regular employees.

Regular employees are eligible to receive benefit coverage that includes:

  • Alberta Health Care
  • group life insurance and long-term disability insurance
  • dental
  • extended health care
  • accidental death and dismemberment
  • participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan

Regular, part-time, casual and long-term temporary employees are eligible to partake in deductions for RRSPs and Canada Savings Bonds.

Benefit coverage for permanent Classified staff (i.e., non-union) begins on date of hire, with the exception of Long Term Disability and the Flexible Spending Fund. Both of these benefits start after six months.

If I am unsuccessful in this competition, will you consider my application for something else?
No. Because of the time it would require to match qualifications and background, we do not review applications for jobs other than the one for which you applied.

How can I keep track of what postings are coming up?
All external Strathcona County postings (i.e., available to the public) are advertised on our website. These positions will also be in Strathcona County This Week, which is published every Friday. Please note that some positions will also be advertised in the Saturday edition of the Edmonton Journal.

When do you start advertising for summer staff?
As early as January for some positions, and continuing until June.
