Reporting to the Manager, Transportation Planning, the Senior Transportation Engineer is responsible for expert advisory support on matters relating to County and regional transportation system through conducting and reviewing long range transportation plans, providing input on regional transportation matters, reviewing and commenting on transportation studies, providing input on capital planning and budgeting, coaching and mentoring junior staff and preparing responses to transportation planning related inquiries.
Responsibilities:
- Provide coaching and mentorship to junior and intermediate staff within the branch as well as other departments through coordination of work
- Provide advanced level technical expertise on County’s overall transportation master planning such as the Integrated Transportation Master Plan to internal staff, external consultants and key stakeholders as well as managing and providing technical expertise on functional planning studies to external consultant
- Review transportation planning related policies and bylaws to ensure they are current and reflective of County standards and regulations
- Review and provide technical and strategic direction on regional transportation plans such as the Capital Regions Board’s transportation studies, Alberta Transportation’s functional planning studies and the Industrial Heartland transportation issues
- Prepare replies to inquiries and issues by Council, the Senior Administration, in-house departments, external agencies, and the general public; in addition to preparing Issue Briefs and Council Reports, and participating in presenting information to Executive Team and Council
- Assist in regional negotiations and planning relating to transportation engineering
- Reviews consultants reports and submissions to ensure compliance with County’s policies and standards
- Provides innovative and responsive solutions to highly sensitive issues forwarded by other departments while working within the framework of legislative requirements to achieve business goals
Qualifications:
- Bachelor degree in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 7 years of directly transportation engineering related experience together with advanced courses and seminars related to traffic and transportation engineering
- A registered (or eligible for registration) with Association of Professional Engineers, Geoscientists, and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA), or the Association of Science and Engineering Technologists of Alberta (ASET)
- Proficiency in computer office tools such as AutoCad/Microstation, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and a valid Alberta Class 5 Drivers Licence
- Demonstrated project management, negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Proficiency in traffic engineering software such as Synchro, SimTraffic and Visum is desirable
- Knowledge of applicable federal, provincial and municipal legislation, traffic and transportation engineering, contract documents, specifications, tendering process, and contract award process
- Understanding of capital planning and programming process in developing annual five-year and long-term capital plans
The annual salary range for this permanent position is $85,285 to $106,597. In addition to providing a dynamic working environment, we offer a 35-hour work week and a competitive benefits package.
