Public Safety Educators (Casual)
Emergency Services
Reporting to the Public Safety Education Supervisor, the Public Safety Educator is responsible for delivering or assisting in the delivery of the department’s public safety programs to the public including first aid and CPR courses.
Responsibilities
- Deliver public safety presentations for awareness and education (New Mom’s Emergency Preparedness and Home Safety; ‘Sparky’/fire safety mascot appearances and walkabouts, Fire Safety/Risk Watch School Program and Fire Safety Talks, trade shows/public events, Firesmart Program)
- Enhance the safety and mitigate risks for residents through awareness, education and information
- Represent department professionally in a uniformed role
- Assist and support department in activities related with public safety
Qualifications
- A minimum of a high school diploma
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills including experience in presenting and public speaking
- Exceptional customer service skills; energetic; dependable; community minded
- Able to work independently and as part of a time, while enthusiastically supporting a team environment
- Able to fulfill the physical requirements of the position, including walking or standing for extended periods of time
- Experience with child or adult education and training is an asset
- Instructor certification status in St. John First Aid and/or Heart and Stroke Foundation is an asset
- Ability and willingness to complete education, training and/or obtain the practical skills and certification as needed/required
- Willing to obtain a criminal record check
The hourly wage range is $17.42 to $21.78, working as needed, year-round including days, evenings and weekends. Public Safety Educators will be expected to attend monthly meetings and occasional training sessions. For positions that include First Aid/CPR instruction duties, successful candidate will be trainer-certified in St. John First Aid and/or Heart and Stroke Foundation or be willing to take instructor training/certification if needed.
