Outdoor Leader

The Outdoor Leader will work at the Strathcona Wilderness Centre and will have the following responsibilities:
- Deliver high quality outdoor education and recreation programs for school, community and adult groups, day camps and the general public. These programs include cross country skiing, snowshoeing, canoeing, kayaking, outdoor skills, orienteering, environmental education and teambuilding/challenge course programs
- Work as a team member with other program leaders to ensure smooth planning and delivery of all outdoor programs offered
- Demonstrate operational knowledge of required program equipment
- Assist with training, supervising and evaluating junior staff and volunteers
- Assist with maintenance and inventory of equipment
- Assist with general maintenance and cleaning of public areas as required by program delivery standards
- Provide excellent customer service to all clients and report back to supervisors issues, concerns and incidents
- Assist with all other duties as requested by the Outdoor Recreation Programmer or Assistant Recreation Programmer
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- In the process of obtaining, or have completed post-secondary education in Physical Education, Recreation, Tourism, Education or related field; or minimum Grade 12 education with proven and logged experience in outdoor skills delivery programming
- Excellent communication, leadership and team building skills
- Proven ability in maintaining standards of safety, quality and cooperation
- Paddle Canada (PC) Lake Canoe Instructor Solo, Lake Canoe Instructor Intermediate Tandem Certification with proven and logged experience in outdoor skills; outdoor pursuit’s qualifications an asset
- Canadian Association for Nordic Ski Instructors(CANSI) Level 1
- Minimum Standard First Aid (40 Hour Wilderness First Aid preferable)
- Proven time management skills and the ability to work with a minimum of supervision
- Outstanding customer service skills and the ability to adapt to changing work environments and demands
The Wilderness Centre can arrange for suitable candidates for the position to obtain the required certifications.
Candidates selected for an interview will be asked to provide a current driver’s abstract and criminal record check.
The hourly wage range is $15.75 to $19.69 working a variety of part-time shifts that include daytime, evenings, weekends and statutory holidays.
