Friendly Visitor Program
Providing companionship for County seniors
The Friendly Visitor program matches volunteers with seniors in the community that would benefit from companionship and support.
Becoming a Friendly Visitor
Isolated seniors need your help staying connected to the community. Becoming a friendly visitor can easily fit into your schedule and become a fulfilling part of your life. You can make a difference in the life of a senior by visiting with them on a regular basis either:
- in their home
or - over the phone
Seniors and volunteers are carefully matched and volunteer training and support are provided. The first round of volunteer training begins in January, 2011. Further information on the volunteer opportunity:
- volunteer position description
- volunteer application
- contact Family and Community Services at 780-464-4044 or via email.
This is an ideal volunteer opportunity for individuals and families who:
- enjoy meeting new people
- have a passion for helping others
- enjoy sharing life stories and experiences
- want to make a difference in their community
Why it is important
The 2009 Seniors Plan Survey found that 30 per cent of respondents were very concerned about being alone or isolated. Friendly visiting can have a lasting impact because social connections help reduce isolation and enhance health and security for older adults.
Information for Seniors
Volunteers are carefully matched, screened and trained before becoming a friendly visitor. If you or someone you care for could benefit from joining the friendly visitor program, please contact Strathcona County Family and Community Services at 780-464-4044 or via email.
