Emergency Communications Operators (both full and part time) operate out of the Communications 9-1-1 Centre at Station #1 - Main fire station.

Characteristics and skills

In order to function effectively in our Communications 9-1-1 Centre, an Emergency Communications Operator should have the following characteristics and skills:

  • An ability to multi-task, rapidly prioritize and manage stress in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Excellent computer and keyboard skills with the ability to adapt to changing technologies.
  • Excellent communication skills to effectively deal with people in person, by telephone or radio, many of whom may be in distress.
  • Personal characteristics of dedication and commitment to duty. ISO-based personal performance standards apply.

Qualifications

To become an Emergency Communications Operator with Strathcona County Emergency Services, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Possess a minimum Grade 12 education or recognized equivalent
  • Be at least 18 years of age
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Successfully complete a medical assessment based on the Functional Demands Analysis for this position

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience as a 9-1-1 Operator and/or Emergency Dispatcher.
  • Post-secondary certification in Emergency Medical/Fire Dispatch, Emergency Medical Responder and/or Emergency Communications.
  • Working knowledge of the FDM computer-aided dispatch program and geographical knowledge of Strathcona County and north-eastern Alberta.
  • Experience with shift work. Shifts are scheduled on a four day on (2 x 0800-1800 hr shifts; 2 x 1800-0800 hrs shifts), four day off basis, averaging 42 hours per week for full time members.
