Strathcona County is a proud and founding member of Alberta’s Industrial Heartland Association.

Alberta’s Industrial Heartland (AIH), or the Heartland as it is known locally, is Canada’s largest hydrocarbon processing region and one of the world’s most attractive locations for petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas investments. Currently, AIH is home to 40+ world class companies with a combined investment of over $25 billion. Located just 50 km (30mi) northeast of downtown Edmonton, the Heartland is a geographic area that spans 582 sq. km (225 sq. mi) across five municipalities. Strathcona County’s Industrial Heartland Area that makes up 194 square km (75 sq. mi) of the AIH area.

AIH was created in 1998 by the municipalities with a goal of partnering up to take a proactive and cooperative approach to planning and development in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland. Since then, Industrial development has been guided by this non-profit association of the five municipal partners using an eco-industrial philosophy, reflecting the interests of the communities, industry and the environment.

Heartland Servicing Project Team

Strathcona County is well equipped to handle current and future growth pressures in the Heartland. The magnitude, rate and complexity of development in Alberta’s Industrial Heartland necessitates a coordinated approach to the planning and delivery of municipal services to the Heartland region. In order to properly handle development, Strathcona County has a cross functional administrative team to support effective development of the Heartland region. The Heartland Servicing Project Team supports effective development by enhancing communications between internal corporate departments and between external stakeholders at the County.

The objective of this team is to facilitate the development of the Heartland in a manner that is consistent with the County’s community vision and supports a sustainable development model. The team ensures that the County’s commitment to quality of life for its residents is taking into account by capitalizing on opportunities and mitigating risks.
