Economic Sustainability Framework

Help shape the Economic Sustainability Framework

Strathcona County wants a healthy, innovative and sustainable economy - one that balances social responsibility and the environment.  A healthy economy means jobs and business opportunities.  It allows the County to run quality community programs, and provide the services and infrastructure that residents value.

With this in mind, Strathcona County has begun work on an Economic Sustainability Framework to guide decisions that will foster and sustain a healthy economy benefitting residents, business and industry.

Community members have been asked what is important to them in how the County supports economic opportunities.  How can municipal fiscal policies, for instance, encourage development and diversity for local business, employment and quality of life?   Community consultation has included targeted interviews, stakeholder focus groups and an online questionnaire.

Strathcona County is working with Nichols Applied Management to research and gather public input in developing the framework.  A draft Economic Sustainability Framework will be available for public review later this year.

Frameworks that support the County's Strategic Plan

As the County's Strategic Plan directs, we are consciously moving toward creating a sustainable community.

The Strategic Plan emphasizes a triple-bottom-line approach to encourage a balance of social, environmental and economic elements to sustain a healthy and vibrant community.
Three frameworks form the foundation to realize this:

  • The Social Sustainability Framework, a guide for developing a well-rounded, caring community that addresses social needs of our residents - approved in March, 2007.
  • The Environmental Sustainability Framework, a guide to assess environmental factors and impacts in our planning and decision making - approved in June, 2009.
  • The Economic Sustainability Framework , a guide to decision making toward fostering a healthy economy that benefits residents, business and industry - the County is currently developing this final framework.
