Long-term funding?an important step

Strathcona appreciates Province's recognition of growth pressures on municipalities

The Province's recent announcement of long-term funding for municipalities is an important step toward addressing growth pressures, meeting the needs of local communities, and enhancing the ability of municipalities to work together in planning for the future, says Strathcona County Mayor Cathy Olesen.

"With greater certainty about provincial funding, Strathcona can focus on collaborating to realize the full potential of our individual community, our region and our province," says Mayor Olesen.

Last week Premier Ed Stelmach and Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Ray Danyluk announced funding under the Municipal Sustainability Initiative. Over the next 10 years, this will provide a total of $11.3 billion for municipalities. The exact amount of funding for communities other than Edmonton and Calgary is being determined and will be announced later this year.

"The Province's announcement recognizes the uniqueness of communities throughout Alberta and the varying circumstances they face," Mayor Olesen notes. "It's a complex and ongoing task to balance these widely differing needs and distribute funds in a manner that is fair to everyone."

In developing the Municipal Sustainability Initiative, the Province consulted with municipalities.

"We appreciated the opportunity to provide input to these important decisions," says Mayor Olesen. "The success of our province and our region is built on consultation, collaboration and partnership. Strathcona is committed to moving forward in that spirit for the benefit of the residents we serve and the Capital Region as a whole."
