County meets with Ministers to clarify status of hospital

September 7, 2010

Hon. Iris Evans, Minister of International and Intergovernmental Relations, and MLA Dave Quest, were instrumental in arranging a meeting today with the Ministers of Alberta Health and Wellness and Alberta Infrastructure. The purpose: to clarify details and respond to concerns surrounding the status of the Strathcona Hospital currently under construction.

In attendance, representing Strathcona County were Mayor Cathy Olesen, Deputy Mayor, Roxanne Carr, and Chief Commissioner, Robyn Singleton.

It was confirmed that Phase I is being built to hospital standards. There is a significant difference between hospital and clinical standards when it comes to mechanical, electrical and technological infrastructure.

This first stage of the project incorporates the mechanical, electrical and structural requirements of Phase II. While this raises development costs to $57 million, it also lays the foundation for Phase II, which is now committed and in the design stage. When complete, Phase II will provide full acute care, including a minimum of 72 beds and surgical suites.

“The tireless efforts of our two MLAs have been critical to moving this project forward,” says Mayor Olesen. “We are greatly encouraged by the clarification the County received today. Both ministers were very responsive to our concerns, and are committed to keeping us informed as the project moves forward. I will continue to press for firm details regarding Phase II, and work alongside the Government of Alberta to bring a high-quality, full-service hospital to the residents of Strathcona County.”
